CLICK HERE TO DIRECTLY SUPPORT THE L.A. BLACK PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER FUND
The LA Black Photographer’s Union is an open membership group of Black photographers. They are seeking to open a photography center/ community space to provide free and low cost photography services to the Leimert park area.
Leimert Park is a historically Black neighborhood that is currently being gentrified, as a result, the group is seeking to buy back (or at least rent out depending on the amount of funding we are able to obtain) our block. The CIM group, backed by Donald Trump is currently looking to buy the Crenshaw Baldwin mall and turn it into offices. The loss of such an important community structure would devastate the economic flow of the area, so the LA Black Photographer's Union is trying to do their part to increase/support the flow of black people able to learn, create art, and use it as a viable source of expression and income, if they choose.
They want to build out a multi use space: that will serve as a photography studio, community center, and exhibition space. They would like to emphasize the use of this space as a queer safe space and plan to set up guidelines for everyone’s personal comfort once formed. The space will offer workshops, crits, classes, and community building time. They are hoping to extend free resources like printing, paper, film, etc for lower income people. They are also hoping to rally black LA camera-based professionals to be able to host free discussions, workshops, art exhibitions, and cookouts.
